• New tools for designers and developers, worth your time?

New tools and applications are released daily. Tools for work flow, design, development, security etc, how does one keep up?

    Who can say.

What is key though, it to learn the art of “spontaneous review“. By this I mean that if we see a tool to automate or improve the way we task life and work, that the following strategy should be considered:

    1. review the company offering the item
    2. how easy is it to find a demo or screen shots of work flow
    3. how easy is it to setup?
    4. do we need registration?
    5. what are the costs post download/trial etc.?

These are my test points. If any of the above takes longer than 5 min, I abandon. Reason, the learning curve will probably take a while and if the benefits of the new app does not outweigh the review process, I move on.

However, sometimes we may miss out. Consider taking a regular monthly “review” day instead, this will probably save time in the long run.

In the meantime, I have discovered some nifty tools for design and development and I’ve listed a few. View the full article (10 New tools for designers and developers) for more tools.

    1. Image Flow
A user-friendly JavaScript image gallery which provides object oriented script that allows you to create many instances of it on one website.
    2. Jekyll
Another simple, blog aware, static site generator for web developers. It provides a template directory representing the raw form of a website, runs it through Textile or Markdown and Liquid converters, and bring out a complete, static website suitable for serving with Apache or your favorite web server.
    3. Ident Engine
A javascript library that recovers and aggregates social profiles from various websites and networks.

    Enjoy!
